How does a dog change the course of your life?
Glenn and I met in Newport Beach, California, in July 2011. Originally from Virginia, I am a clothing designer and business consultant. Glenn’s a retired casino executive from Las Vegas, an art collector, and also the co-founder of Mahana Estates Winery in the Mahana region of New Zealand’s South Island. It did not take long for us to realize that our relationship would lead to marriage. Given our stages in life, though, we decided on furry kids to make our house a home.
It took a chance meeting with a Vizsla, a movie, and an evening of reading through a dog encyclopedia to decide that a liver nose Rhodesian Ridgeback was absolutely what we were looking for. We loved the coloring of the Vizsla, but were looking for a bigger breed with an independent spirit, but with a little less bouncing energy.
One night we were watching Greg Kinnear in the movie “As Good As It Gets.” During one scene, guys break into his home and beat him up. Glenn turned to me and said, “That would never happen with a Rhodesian Ridgeback in the house!” Then he admitted he had never seen a Ridgeback before. I had, and said, “You’re right about that.” The next night we pulled out the encyclopedia of dogs, going through it page by page and marking the breeds we might be interested in. When we read that Ridgebacks were originally bred to hunt lions, he said, “There’s my back-up!”
And the search was on …
It took months, ’round the clock research, and a whole lot of luck to find Beau, but we did. Marie Cotton of Spring Valley Rhodesian Ridgebacks gave us our Beau, and she set us on a new course. All of the pups have brought a whole new meaning and direction in our lives– one we would never have thought of before they came along.
As it is said, it is the journey, not the destination…we are on our journey. We wouldn’t change a thing. We hope you find your journey as interesting too and will share the love of this breed with us.
Chandler is a proud member of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of the United States.
